How the Blue Bird Got Its Colour
At the time of Creation, all the animals were the same grayish color. One day, a small bird landed on a tree above a beautiful pool of water. The water was such a lovely color that the little bird wished out loud that he could be that pretty color, as well. The pool heard the bird and said, "You can be blue, just like me" "How can I do that? " asked the bird . The pool told him that he must do exactly what he was told and then he, too, would be blue.
The pool said , "For the next three days you must wake up, dive into the water , and then fly back up to that tree branch and dry out completely. At the end of drying yourself for the third time you will be blue just like me". The little bird was so excited he could hardly wait for the next day. In the morning he dove into the water and flew back up to the tree branch and fluffed his feathers up so they would dry in the sun. Once he was dry he looked at first his right wing, then his left wing, and finally his body and found that they were all turning blue. The little bird was happy and so followed the pool's directions exactly for the next two days and indeed became the beautiful Blubird that we know now.
Then Bluebird went off to show his friends his new color. Coyote saw him and asked him where he got his color? Bluebird told him about the pool and Coyote went off to the pool to find out how he could become blue. The pool told Coyote that if he followed exactly the directions he would be given, then he would be blue, too.
The pool gave Coyote the same directions he gave Blubird except that Coyote was to dry himself off on the banks of the pool instead of sitting on a tree branch to do so. Coyote was so escited that he couldn't wait for the next morning, so he dove into the pool and climbed out and shook himself off. Then he looked at his four legs and body and saw that they were turning blue. He was so happy that he rolled around in the mud beside the pool and ran off to show his friends his new color.
Coyote first met rabbit and said: "Look, look, look! I'm blue!"Rabbit said, "I don't think so."Then Coyote thought that Rabbit was just jealous and went on until he met Bear and said to him, "Look, look, look! I'm blue!" But Bear said, "I don't think that is the color you are."Coyote started to get nervous so he went off to find Owl. Owl was wise and would tell him the truth. When Coyote found Owl he said, "Look, look, look, I'm blue!"But like the others, Owl disagreed and then told Coyote to look at himself carefully.
When Coyote did so, he found that he was a muddy shade of brown. He was very unhappy and went back to the pool and dove in to try and make himself blue, but it didn't work. When he asked the pool to help, the pool said that Coyote would have to be the color he was now since he hadn't followed his directions correctly. Then Coyote ran away to hide himself in the hills and to this day you can hear him cry on lonely night, "I'm blue! I'm blue!"
